A group of interns served evangelists and church leaders from across Europe during BGEA’s recent Congress on Evangelism in Berlin, Germany.

This past May, over 1,000 Christian leaders from 55 countries and territories gathered in Berlin for the European Congress on Evangelism, hosted by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA).

The congress was held shortly after a group of college students and recent graduates began their BGEA internship, which included serving behind the scenes in Berlin. Their work during the four-day congress set the tone for the remainder of their summer—and prayerfully, for the rest of their lives.

“I prayed before going. It was just, ‘Help me be expectant, Lord. Whatever you have for me, I want to receive it during this time,’” said Micah, who has worked with BGEA’s Internet Evangelism ministry this summer.

As a missionary kid growing up in France, Micah understood the challenges of reaching Europe with the Gospel. He had been discouraged at the slow spiritual progress, struggling to believe that God is at work in France. But as he worshipped with thousands of European evangelists last spring, his perspective shifted.

“I didn't realize I’d placed these limitations on God. But those are gone now. I realized, truly, the gates of hell can't prevail against the church in Europe,” Micah said.

Franklin Graham stood with interns from both BGEA and sister ministry Samaritan’s Purse. They were a huge help in executing the congress, which focused on unifying, inspiring, and strengthening Christian leaders in unashamedly sharing the Gospel.

This led him and a few other interns to be bold about sharing the Good News everywhere they went, starting at the hotel in Berlin. There was one employee they always passed as they walked into congress sessions, and one day, Micah and Lance—a software development intern—approached the man.

“He knew that Jesus existed, but he didn't know the Gospel at all,” Micah recalled.

He and Lance walked the employee through the message of the Gospel using a simple, effective method they learned during the congress.

“He's listening and I can see tears in his eyes ... hearing about the love of God, that God gave Himself for us,” said Micah.

Although the man wasn’t ready to commit his life to Jesus Christ that evening, the interaction encouraged the two young interns to keep sharing the Good News throughout their time in Germany and once they returned to the United States.

Intern Reconnects With Home Country

Sofiya, an intern at the Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove in Asheville, North Carolina, was also blessed as she saw God working in some difficult places across the world.

Sofiya grew up in Ukraine, and during a powerful moment at the congress, a pastor from her church in Ukraine spoke about the challenges facing her people in the midst of war.

“Many pastors left their churches; they went to other countries because they didn’t feel safe,” Sofiya said. “It’s hard to stay and to lead people in difficult times. But God sees everything and God keeps everything in control. ... They’re staying strong.”

Sofiya left encouraged by God’s sustaining grace in her country. She also felt empowered to use her gifts to build up other Christians around her.

Work With Purpose

Back from Europe, the interns returned to their cubicles, busy with content creation, coding, and spreadsheets. Miles away from Germany, they can see a clear tie between what they’ve done this summer and God’s call on each believer to tell others about Him.

Directly above Micah’s cubicle at BGEA headquarters in Charlotte, a screen displays an interactive globe that gives a real-time view of where people made decisions for Christ through our Internet Evangelism ministry, Search for Jesus. It’s a daily reminder for him that the work he’s doing reaches around the world—with an eternal impact.

“You see the fruit minute by minute,” Micah said. “That is fueling.”

At her office in Asheville, Sofiya keeps a small paper in her cubicle that reads, “All that you do, do the best for God,” a reminder that her work matters to the Lord.

Both Sofiya and Micah returned from the congress with a passion for evangelism and encouraged to share the hope of Jesus Christ wherever they go.

“Yes, we are in the Bible Belt,” said Micah, “[but] there are so many people here in Charlotte ... who need to hear the Good News. And so, I felt myself praying more expectantly, like, ‘God, what doors for the Gospel will You open today?’”
