Law Enforcement Encouraged in Faith, Family, Service

Officers and their spouses find renewal at California retreat

Many BG-RRT chaplains have a law enforcement background and are familiar with the unique struggles that come along with it. Chaplains can relate with officers, speaking into the pressures they face and sharing what God has taught them along the way.

This month, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (BG-RRT) welcomed 93 officers and their spouses to a Law Enforcement Appreciation Retreat in San Ramon, California. These retreats, offered free of charge to first-time guests, provide an opportunity for fellowship and encouragement in God’s Word. 

“This has changed my life,” one attendee said. “I have new friends who will help me in my journey through this life.”

For officers around the country, the day-to-day job can become burdensome and chaotic. Law Enforcement Appreciation Retreats offer a time of respite and restoration—spiritually and physically.

Retired Raileigh Police Chief Estella Patterson encouraged the group of nearly 100 to look at Scripture for guidance on responding to difficult situations. “Put your stock in Jesus, knowing that He will never leave you, nor forsake you, nor embarrass you for doing what is right,” she urged.

Officers regularly witness the result of sin in this world through crime, violence, and everyday struggles. Throughout the retreat, they heard how a relationship with God is our only hope for transformation—and for eternal life. Five people in attendance chose to begin a relationship with Him.

“You all have a gift. Use it to glorify God,” speaker Wayne Embrey said. He reminded the crowd to embrace their calling and career with purpose—and with their eyes fixed on the One who created them. Embrey draws from over 30 years in law enforcement, including serving as a SWAT team commander.

Through prayer and worship, Christ-centered speakers, and hospitality, BG-RRT took every opportunity to point to the Good News. During a Q&A panel, guests had the opportunity to ask seasoned law enforcement officers and their spouses pressing questions about service, faith, and family.

Relying on over two decades of investigative experience, cold case homicide detective J. Warner Wallace offered evidence for who Jesus is and the authority of the Bible.

One retired officer in San Ramon said the retreat “has given me more understanding of the love of Christ and hope—how to deal better with adversity.”

The Tommy Coomes Band led the group in worship to the One who is "our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1, ESV).

Attendees gathered outside for refreshments and conversation. A safe, low-stress environment offered time to decompress, get to know each other, and share experiences.
